St. Patrick Cathedral is a very important church for the Catholic Church in Fort Worth, Texas, United States. It is the main church, called a cathedral, for the Diocese of Fort Worth. This means it's where the bishop (a leader in the church) has his special chair.
Building of St. Patrick's church started in 1888 and it was officially opened in 1892. The church and other nearby buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list recognizes places that are important to history. The church building, the rectory (where priests live), and St. Ignatius Academy are all part of this historic complex. Both the church and the academy are also known as Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks, which means they are important historical sites in Texas.

The History of St. Patrick's
How the Church Started
The Catholic community in Fort Worth began to grow around 1870. A priest named Father Vincent Perrier would visit the Catholics in Fort Worth twice a year. They would meet for church services in the home of the Carrico family.
Fort Worth's very first Catholic church was called St. Stanislaus. It was a simple wooden building located on Throckmorton Street. In 1879, Father Thomas Loughrey became the priest for St. Stanislaus. He started a school for boys, and classes were held inside the church building. This first church building was used until 1907, when it was taken down.
Building the Cathedral
The beautiful St. Patrick's church you see today was built next to the old St. Stanislaus Church. Construction began in 1888 when the first stone, called the cornerstone, was put in place. The church was finished and officially opened in 1892.
The church was designed by an architect named James J. Kane. He designed it in the Gothic Revival style, which is known for its tall arches and detailed decorations.
Becoming a Cathedral
In 1953, St. Patrick's became a "co-cathedral." This happened when Pope Pius XII, the leader of the Catholic Church, changed the name of the Diocese of Dallas to the Diocese of Dallas-Fort Worth.
Later, on August 22, 1969, Pope Paul VI made another change. He divided the larger diocese and created a new one just for Fort Worth, called the Diocese of Fort Worth. St. Patrick's was chosen to be the main church, or cathedral, for this new diocese.
Because of its history and beautiful architecture, St. Patrick's Cathedral was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
