St. Patrick Catholic Church (Los Angeles) facts for kids
Saint Patrick Catholic Church is a special place of worship located in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. It is one of the oldest parishes, or church communities, in Los Angeles.
A Welcoming History
St. Patrick's Church first opened its doors in 1907. For over a hundred years, this church has been a welcoming place for many different groups of people. When it first started, it welcomed Irish and German immigrants. Later, in the 1920s and 1930s, it became a home for African Americans. In the 1950s, it welcomed Mexican families. Since the 1980s, it has continued to welcome people, especially those from Central America.
Rebuilding After Earthquakes
The original church building faced some tough times. In 1933, an earthquake hit, and it destroyed the church's famous towers. The building had to be rebuilt. Then, in 1971, another big earthquake, called the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, completely destroyed the church again.
After the second earthquake, the church community, called the parish, didn't have enough money to rebuild right away. So, for 35 years, they held their church services in the parish hall, which is like a community room. More than 600 people usually came to Mass, but the hall could only fit 402 people. This meant many people had to stand outside the door to attend!
To help build a new church, Bishop Stephen Blaire and Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson came up with a plan. They asked all the other Catholic churches and generous people in the Our Lady of the Angels Pastoral Region to help. Many parishes, individual donors, and foundations gave money.
Under the leadership of Bishop Edward William Clark, construction on the new St. Patrick's Church began in April 2005. This new church was designed to hold 1,000 people. It was officially opened and blessed on March 17, 2007, which is St. Patrick's Day.
A Growing Community
St. Patrick's Church is a very active place with a large community.
- About 1,500 families are part of the church.
- Around 5,000 people attend regularly.
- Each year, about 475 baptisms take place.
- There are 700 students who attend weekly religious education classes.
- The new church building can seat 1,000 people, which is much more than the old hall's capacity of 402. This helps everyone attend Mass comfortably.
