St. Paul's Episcopal Church was first imagined by a well-known financier named Jay Cooke. A financier is someone who manages large amounts of money. He worked with others like John W. Thomas to start the church.
Building the Church
The church was originally built in 1861. It was designed in the Gothic Revival style. This style looks like the grand cathedrals and castles from medieval Europe. The church is made of gray stone, giving it a strong and classic look.
Over the years, the church grew bigger.
- In 1870, its size was doubled. A tall, 60-foot tower was also added.
- In 1883, a part called a transept was built. A transept is a section that crosses the main part of the church, making it look like a cross from above.
- In 1891, a two-story parish hall wing was added. This hall is used for church activities and gatherings.
A famous architect named Horace Trumbauer also worked on the church. He made some improvements between 1897 and 1924.
Special Features Inside
One of the most amazing things inside the main church area is the stained glass. There are 13 beautiful stained glass windows. These windows were made by Tiffany Studios. Tiffany Studios was famous for creating stunning glass art.
Other Buildings on the Property
The church property includes more than just the main building.
- There is a two-and-a-half-story rectory, which was built in 1868. A rectory is where the church's priest or minister lives.
- There is also an old stable on the grounds.
- The Jay Cooke Memorial Hall was built in 1906. This hall is named after the church's founder.
- A sexton's cottage was added in 1923. A sexton is someone who takes care of the church building and grounds.
The Church Cemetery
Next to the church is a cemetery. It was first laid out in 1879 and made larger in 1905. Many people from the community are buried here. Inside the cemetery, you can find the mausoleum of Jay Cooke. A mausoleum is a special building where someone is buried.
