St. Paul's Episcopal Church is a very old church located at 27 Pleasant Street in Brunswick, Maine. It was built in 1845. This church is special because it's an early example of a style called Carpenter Gothic.

A famous architect named Richard Upjohn designed it. He was already well-known for designing bigger Gothic churches. In 1978, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site in the United States.

What Does St. Paul's Church Look Like?

St. Paul's Church is found a short distance west of Brunswick's main downtown area. It sits at the corner of Pleasant and Union Streets.

The church has a simple shape, like a cross, which is called a cruciform structure. It is made of wood. The outside walls are covered with vertical boards and thin strips of wood called "battens."

The roof has a pointed shape, known as a gabled roof. Unlike some of Upjohn's other designs, this church does not have a tall tower. It also has parts that stick out on the sides, called transepts. These were not in his typical plans from his 1852 guide, Upjohn's Rural Architecture.

The windows on the sides are tall and narrow with pointed tops, a style called lancet-arched Gothic. The main entrance is at the west end of the church. It's also a lancet-arched opening with a small roof over it. Each pointed end of the roof has a small round window, called an oculus window.

Who Designed St. Paul's Church?

The group that started the Brunswick Episcopal church came together in 1844. This was the third Episcopal church group formed in Maine.

The church building was designed in 1845 by Richard Upjohn. He became famous for designing Trinity Church in Manhattan. That church was built in 1841 and is now a very important national landmark. He also designed St. John's Episcopal Church in Bangor in 1839.

Upjohn's fame brought him many jobs, even for smaller churches that didn't have a lot of money. Because of this, he published his book, Upjohn's Rural Architecture, in 1852. This book had plans for simpler churches. St. Paul's Church is a clear example of the designs he later shared in his book. These designs were used widely across the country.
