St. Paul's Episcopal Church is a beautiful old church in Selma, Alabama. It is made of red brick and built in a style called Gothic Revival. This church is located at 210 Lauderdale Street. The church community, called a parish, started way back in 1838. Their first church building was sadly burned down on April 2, 1865. This happened during a big event called the Battle of Selma. The church you see today was designed by a famous architecture company from New York City, led by Richard Upjohn. It was finished in 1875.

Early Beginnings
The St. Paul's Episcopal Church community began in 1838. At first, they had a different church building. This first building served the people of Selma for many years. It was a special place for the community.
The Battle of Selma
During the American Civil War, a big battle happened in Selma. It was called the Battle of Selma. On April 2, 1865, the original church building was destroyed. This happened during the fighting. Union General James H. Wilson was involved in the events of that day.
Building the New Church
After the war, the community worked to build a new church. They hired a very well-known architect, Richard Upjohn. His company was famous for designing many beautiful buildings. The construction of the new St. Paul's Church started in 1871. It took several years to build. The church was finally completed in 1875.

Amazing Stained Glass Windows
The inside of St. Paul's Church is very special. It has several amazing stained glass windows. These windows were designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. He was a famous artist known for his beautiful glasswork.
One of the artists who worked on these windows was Clara Weaver Parrish. She was from Selma and was a member of this very church. Clara Parrish was a talented artist. She worked for Tiffany Studios in New York. Her work made the church even more beautiful.
Gothic Revival Style
The church's design is called Gothic Revival. This style was popular in the 1800s. It looks like the grand cathedrals from the Middle Ages. You can see this style in the pointed arches and tall windows. The red brick also gives it a classic look.
National Recognition
St. Paul's Episcopal Church is an important historical building. Because of its history and beautiful design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on March 25, 1975. Being on this list means it is recognized as a significant place in American history.
St. Paul's Today
St. Paul's Episcopal Church is still an active church today. It is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. The church continues to serve its community. As of August 2025, the Reverend Amy George is the current leader of the church. She is the twenty-third rector, or head priest, of St. Paul's.
