Discovering St. Peter's Church
St. Peter's Church is the largest and oldest Catholic church in Rutland. It is sometimes called the "mother parish" because it was the first. The church was built between 1869 and 1873. Italian American stoneworkers did much of the construction. They used stone from a quarry right at the church site.
Church Design and Features
The church was designed by Patrick C. Keely. He was a well-known church architect from Brooklyn, New York. St. Peter's is famous for its strong, rough stone walls on the outside. Inside, it has a very tall ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows.
The church is quite large. It measures 150 feet long and 71 feet wide. More than 880 people can sit inside the church.
Changes Over the Years
St. Peter's Church has been updated several times. Major renovations happened in 1950, 1973, and again from 2000 to 2004. These changes helped keep the church in good condition.
A priest named Father Charles Boylan is buried near the church tower. He was the priest who helped get the church built. He also helped build the original Sisters of Saint Joseph Convent.
Connected Buildings and Community
St. Peter's Parish is closely connected to other important places. These include Mount St. Joseph Academy, which is a school. It is also linked to the St. Joseph Home and the Loretto Home. These are places that help people in the community.
The church is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington. Priests from the Capuchin Franciscan Province of Saint Mary currently manage St. Peter Parish.
