The History of St. Peter's Church
St. Peter's Church has a long and interesting history. It is the seventh place of worship for the Episcopalian community in Peterhead. This community had to leave their main church, called the parish kirk, way back in 1699.
Early Meeting Places
After leaving the parish kirk, the church leader, Alexander Barclay, started holding services in his own home. Later, in 1731, a small chapel was built near Broad Street. However, this chapel was destroyed in May 1746 by Lord Ancrum's orders. After that, church services were held in private homes again for a while.
Moving to New Locations
Over the years, the church moved to several different places. Each move helped the community continue their worship.
- Chapel Street: The church moved here starting in 1767.
- Geary's Close: This location was on Broad Street.
- Merchant Street (Original Building): An earlier building on Merchant Street was used from 1798.
- Merchant Street (Today's Building): The current church building on Merchant Street has been used since 1814.
Changes and Additions to the Church
During the time of Gilbert Rorison, who was the minister from 1845 to 1869, some important changes were made to the church. The apse, which is a rounded part of the church, was added. Also, the beautiful Torry Memorial Window was put in. The church's organ, which makes music during services, was built in 1867.
