St. Peter's Church and Mount St. Joseph Convent Complex is a special group of buildings in Rutland, Vermont. It's a place for Roman Catholic religious activities and learning. You can find it on Convent and Meadow Streets. This complex has a church, a rectory (where the priest lives), two schools, a convent (where nuns live), and a building for older people.

This important site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The church itself is very famous for its design. It was created by a well-known architect named Patrick C. Keely.

Exploring St. Peter's Church and Its History

St. Peter's Church is the largest and oldest Roman Catholic church in Rutland. It's often called the "mother parish" because it was the first. The church was built mostly by Italian American stoneworkers. They used stone from the church's own site! Construction happened between 1869 and 1873.

The Church's Design and Size

The church was designed by Patrick C. Keely, a famous architect from Brooklyn, New York. He was known for designing many churches in the 1800s. St. Peter's Church is special because of its strong, rough stone walls on the outside. Inside, it has a very tall ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows.

The church is quite large. It is about 150 feet long and 71 feet wide. More than 880 people can sit inside at one time.

Important Updates and People

Over the years, the church has had several big updates. These happened in 1950, 1973, and again from 2000 to 2004.

Next to the church tower, there is a large monument. It marks the burial place of Father Charles Boylan. He was the priest who helped make sure the church was built. He also helped build the former Sisters of Saint Joseph Convent, which is right across Convent Avenue.

Community Connections

St. Peter's Parish is closely connected to other important places. These include Mount St. Joseph Academy, which is a school. It also has ties to the St. Joseph Home and the Loretto Home. The church is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington. Today, priests from the Capuchin Franciscan Province of Saint Mary manage St. Peter Parish.
