St. Peter's Church is a special building located on Merchant Street in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is known as a Category B listed building, which means it's important for its history or architecture.
The church was started in 1814. It even includes an older house from the late 1700s. This old house is thought to have been the original home for the church leader. The building you see today was built where an older church from 1798 used to stand. It first opened for people to worship on December 24, 1814. Later, it was officially blessed on August 2, 1857, by Bishop Suther. The person who designed this church was an architect named Robert Mitchell.
St. Peter's Church is part of the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney. This is a group of churches in the area.
A Long History
St. Peter's Church has a very interesting past. It is the seventh place of worship for the Episcopalian community in Peterhead. The Episcopalians are a type of Christian church. Their first church was taken from them in 1699.
Early Locations
After losing their first church, the community had to find new places to meet.
- In 1699, the church leader, Alexander Barclay, held services in his own home.
- Later, in 1731, a small chapel was built on Broad Street.
- Sadly, this chapel was destroyed in May 1746. After that, services were held in private homes again.
Moving Around Peterhead
Over the years, the church moved to several different spots in Peterhead:
- Chapel Street: From 1767, they had a new home here.
- Geary's Close: This was another location on Broad Street.
- Merchant Street (original building): In 1798, they moved to Merchant Street. This was the first church building on this street.
- Merchant Street (today's building): The current church building opened in 1814, right on the same street.
Changes Over Time
During the time of Gilbert Rorison, who was the church leader from 1845 to 1869, some important changes were made.
- The apse was added. This is a rounded part at the end of the church, usually where the altar is.
- The Torry Memorial Window was also put in. This is a special stained-glass window.
- In 1867, the church got its organ. An organ is a large musical instrument used in churches.
