Scientific classification
Genus:
Cyclamen
Species:
balearicum

The Cyclamen balearicum, also known as the Majorca cyclamen or Balearic cyclamen, is a beautiful perennial plant. This means it lives for more than two years. It grows from a special underground stem called a tuber, which helps it store food and water.

You can find this plant in shady areas of forests. It often grows near trees like holm oak, Kermes oak, and box. It can grow quite high up, sometimes over 1,400 feet above sea level. Its main home is the Balearic Islands, but you can also find small groups of them in parts of France, from the Pyrenees mountains to the Rhone valley.

What Does Cyclamen Balearicum Look Like?

Flowers and Petals

The flowers of the Balearic cyclamen are very pretty. They usually bloom in the spring. Each flower has a lovely smell and five white petals. These petals curve upwards, giving the flower a unique look.

Leaves and Patterns

The leaves of this plant are shaped like arrowheads. They have a cool blue-green color. What makes them special is their silver patterns. This is called variegation. The patterns are not as sharp or clear as on some other types of cyclamen plants, but they still look very nice.

Where Does Cyclamen Balearicum Grow?

Natural Habitat

This cyclamen loves to grow in places where it's a bit shady and cool. It's often found in woodlands with short evergreen trees and shrubs. These plants stay green all year round. The soil in these areas is usually well-drained, which is good for the cyclamen's tuber.

Geographic Distribution

The main place where Cyclamen balearicum lives is the Balearic Islands. These islands are in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Spain. You can also find small, separate groups of these plants in France. They grow in areas stretching from the Pyrenees mountains, which form a border with Spain, all the way to the Rhone valley in southeastern France. This shows that the plant can adapt to different, but similar, environments.
