The St. Philip Neri Cathedral (also known as Spanish: Catedral de San Felipe Neri) is a very important church in Los Teques, Venezuela. It is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Los Teques. A diocese is like a special area that a bishop looks after.
This cathedral is in the old part of Los Teques. You can find it right in front of the famous Plaza Bolivar.
History of the Cathedral
The St. Philip Neri Cathedral started as a small place for prayer. This was back in the 1700s.
From Oratory to Church
In the 18th century, it was first known as a simple "oratory." This is a small chapel or room used for prayer. On September 17, 1778, the very first Mass was held here. A Mass is a special church service. The first priest to lead this service was Manuel Antonio Fernandez Feo.
Later, the building grew into a full church. It officially opened its doors on May 31, 1790. Over time, it became the important cathedral we see today.
