A New Beginning for St Alkmund's
The original St Alkmund's Church was a Victorian building. It was demolished in 1968 to allow the construction of the Derby inner ring road, called St Alkmund's Way (A601). This new road helped traffic move better through the city.
Discovering Ancient History
When the old church was taken down, workers found exciting clues about even older churches. These traces went all the way back to the 9th century! Among the discoveries was a stone coffin, known as a sarcophagus. This coffin belonged to Alkmund of Derby. You can now see this important historical item at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
The Modern Church Building
The current St Alkmund's Church was officially opened in 1972. In 1984, the church community of St Werburgh's joined with St Alkmund's. This created a larger church family.
Who Leads St Alkmund's Today?
The church has a team of leaders who help guide the community. In November 2021, Rev’d. Mina Munns became the Vicar of St Alkmund's. She leads the church and its activities.
The Church Leadership Team
In July 2022, Rev’d. Fay Price joined the team as an Associate Curate. Rev’d. James Durrant also serves as an Associate Minister. Together, they help support the church and its members.
