Discovering the Past of St Alkmund's
When the old Victorian church was removed, builders found exciting clues about even older churches. These traces showed that churches had stood on this spot since the 9th century! Among the discoveries was a stone coffin, called a sarcophagus. This coffin belonged to Alkmund of Derby, an important historical figure. You can now see his sarcophagus at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
A New Beginning for the Church
The new St Alkmund's Church was officially opened in 1972. A few years later, in 1984, the church joined with the parish of St Werburgh's. This meant that the two church communities became one.
Leaders and Community at St Alkmund's
St Alkmund's Church has had many leaders over the years. In December 2017, the church's leader, Revd Canon Jean Burgess, was chosen for a new role. She became the Archdeacon of Bolton in the Anglican Diocese of Manchester.
