What Was St Alphage House?

St Alphage House was an office building completed in 1962. It was 68.5 meters (about 225 feet) tall. The building had 17 floors. It was a modern-looking building for its time.

Building a New London

A company called Maurice Wingate built St Alphage House. The design was created by Maurice Sanders Associates. This building was part of a big project. This project aimed to rebuild the London Wall area. Many similar buildings were put up between 1957 and 1976.

Why Was It Named St Alphage?

The building got its name from a saint. This saint was called Saint Alphege. There was also a church nearby named St Alphage London Wall. The ruins of this old church were right below where the building stood.

The End of St Alphage House

In 2009, people learned that the building would be emptied. The City of London Corporation decided this. They planned to remove everything from inside. The building was later taken down. Demolition started in 2013 and finished in 2014.

St Alphage Garden is a park located very close to where the building once stood.
