The Church of St Andrew is a very old and special church located in Clevedon, a town in Somerset, England. It sits on a hill and looks out over the Bristol Channel, which is part of the sea. Some parts of this church are from the 12th century, which means they are over 800 years old! Other parts were added later in the 14th and 15th centuries. This church is so important that it has been named a Grade I listed building. This means it's one of the most important historic buildings in England and is protected.
The church was built on even older foundations from the Anglo-Saxon period. The Anglo-Saxons were people who lived in England many centuries ago, before the Norman Conquest in 1066.
Famous Connections and Features
The Church of St Andrew is the burial place of Arthur Hallam. He was a close friend of the famous poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Tennyson wrote a very long and famous poem called In Memoriam A.H.H. to remember Arthur Hallam after he passed away.
On the outside of the church, you might spot a special carving. It is thought to be a Sheela na gig, which is a type of old stone carving often found on churches in Ireland and Great Britain. These carvings usually show a female figure and are a mystery to historians.
