Completed 14th century

The Church of St Andrew is a very old church in Clevedon, England. It stands on a hill with great views of the Bristol Channel. Parts of this church are from the 12th century, which means it's over 800 years old! Over time, new parts were added in the 14th and 15th centuries. Because it's so old and important, it's called a Grade I listed building. This means it's a special historical place that needs to be protected.

A Church with a Long Story

This church was built on top of even older foundations from the Anglo-Saxon period. The Anglo-Saxons lived in England many centuries ago, before the Norman Conquest in 1066. This shows that people have been using this spot for worship for a very long time.

Famous Connections

The Church of St Andrew is the resting place of a young man named Arthur Hallam. He was a very close friend of the famous poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. When Arthur died at a young age, Tennyson wrote a long and beautiful poem called In Memoriam A.H.H. to remember him. This poem is one of Tennyson's most famous works.

Mysterious Carvings

If you look closely at the outside of the church, you might spot an interesting carving. It could be a Sheela na gig. These are old, mysterious carvings often found on churches in Ireland and Britain. They usually show a female figure and their exact meaning is still debated by historians.

Filming Location

You might have even seen this church on TV! The Church of St Andrew was used as a filming location for the popular crime drama show Broadchurch. It appeared in all three series of the show as the local parish church. This made the church famous to many viewers around the world.
