The Church of St Andrew is a very old church located in Curry Rivel, a village in Somerset, England. It was built a long time ago, starting in the 13th century. This means it's over 700 years old!
The church is considered a special building. It is a Grade I listed building. This means it is one of the most important historic buildings in England. It is protected so it can be kept safe for many more years. A famous writer named Simon Jenkins even included it in his book about England's best churches.
History of St Andrew's Church
The oldest part of the church is called the north chapel. It was built in the Norman style. This style was popular after the Normans came to England in 1066. It uses thick walls and round arches.
Some people think there might have been an even older church here. It could have been built by the Saxons, who lived in England before the Normans. Most of the church you see today was built in the 15th century. This was during the late Middle Ages.
Changes Over Time
The church has changed quite a bit over the centuries. The original tower was taken down and rebuilt in 1861. At the same time, the inside of the church was also updated.
Inside the tower, there are eight bells. The oldest bell is very special because it was made in 1510. Imagine how many times that bell has rung over the years!
Inside the Church
When you go inside the Church of St Andrew, you can see many interesting things. There are several old monuments from the 13th century. These are like memorials for important people from long ago.
You can also see a "parclose screen." This is a special wooden screen. It separates different parts of the church, like a chapel from the main area. It's a beautiful example of old craftsmanship.
The Church Today
The Church of St Andrew is still an active church today. It is part of the Anglican Church. This means it is a Church of England parish church. It serves the local community of Curry Rivel and nearby villages.
