About St. Andrew's Church
St. Andrew's Church is part of the Diocese of Guildford. The first vicar (a type of church leader) for the area started in 1981. Before the church building was ready, services were held in local schools.
The current church building opened in 1988. It was designed by an architect named Robert Potter. The church is located within the Goldsworth Park Centre, close to shops and a health centre.
The church describes itself as a "community-focused evangelical church." This means it focuses on helping the local community and follows a certain style of Christian faith. It also has a modern building.
The church's website is not just for church news. It also shares information about its coffee shop and the community centre it supports.
The A2 Youth & Community Centre
The A2 Youth & Community Centre is a special building next to the church. St. Andrew's Church helped pay for and opened this centre in 2008. It provides a safe and fun place for young people. The centre also hosts many local community events and social gatherings.
The Goldsworth Park Parish
Goldsworth Park is a "parish" of the Church of England. A parish is like a church's local area. This parish was created to serve the Goldsworth Park area. This area has many different types of homes, parks, gardens, and roads. It was planned as a "garden estate," meaning it has lots of green spaces.
The Goldsworth Park parish is bordered by other areas. These include St John's and Woking to the south. To the west and north-east, it is bordered by Knaphill and Horsell.
History of the Parish
For a very long time, Goldsworth Park was part of the Woking parish. This was true from the year 1086, when the Domesday Book was written, until 1884. The Woking parish was very large, covering about 10,000 acres.
A church called St John the Baptist Church was built in the Goldsworth area in 1842. It was designed by George Gilbert Scott. This church was made bigger in 1879 and again in 1883. In 1884, the area around St John's became its own parish.
Later, in the 20th century, the area around St John's Church became known simply as St Johns. In 1988, a large part of this area became a new parish. This new parish was for St. Andrew's Church. The developers of the area chose a name for the new parish that was similar to the old name of the district.
