St Andrew's Church in Wolverhampton is a special place of worship. It is a parish church that belongs to the Church of England.

The Story of St Andrew's Church

This church has an interesting history. It was built, destroyed, and then rebuilt.

Building the First Church

The first St Andrew's Church began construction a long time ago. Its foundation stone was laid on May 25, 1865. This means the very first stone was put in place. Reverend J.H. Iles helped start the building work.

The church was designed by a local architect named Edward Banks. When it was first built, it could hold 311 people.

Growing Bigger

The church quickly needed more space. So, in 1870, it was made larger. After the expansion, it could seat 700 people. The church was officially opened and blessed on November 2, 1870. This special ceremony is called a consecration.

More additions were made to the church in 1891 and 1892. These were designed by F.T. Beck.

A Fire and a New Beginning

Sadly, on May 31, 1964, a big fire destroyed the church. Almost everything was lost. Only two beautiful stained glass windows survived the flames.

A new church was then designed by Richard Twentyman. Construction started in 1965. The new St Andrew's Church was completed and opened in 1967. It cost about £48,000 to build back then.

The Famous West Window

One of the most amazing parts of the new church is its west window. This window was designed by a famous artist named John Piper. It was created by Patrick Reyntiens. Stained glass windows often tell stories or show important symbols.
