St Andrew's Church, Wolverhampton is a parish church in the Church of England. It is located in the city of Wolverhampton, England. This church is dedicated to St Andrew.

A Look Back in Time

Building the First Church

The first St Andrew's Church began construction a long time ago. Its foundation stone was laid on May 25, 1865. A local architect named Edward Banks designed this original building. It was planned to hold 311 people.

Growing Bigger

The church quickly became more popular. In 1870, it was made larger to fit 700 people. The expanded church was officially opened on November 2, 1870. More additions were made in 1891 and 1892 by F.T. Beck.

A Sad Day: The Fire

Sadly, on May 31, 1964, a fire destroyed the church. It was a big loss for the community. Only two of the beautiful stained glass windows survived the fire.

A New Beginning

After the fire, a new church was designed. The architect for this new building was Richard Twentyman. Construction started in 1965. The new St Andrew's Church was completed and opened in 1967.

Special Features of the New Church

The new church cost about £48,000 to build in 1967. This would be a lot more money today! A famous artist named John Piper designed the large west window. It was created by Patrick Reyntiens. A well-known expert, Pevsner, described the new building as Blocky, of brick, and convincing. This means he thought its brick design was strong and impressive.
