St Andrew House is a tall building in the middle of Glasgow, Scotland. Today, it is known as the Premier Inn Glasgow Buchanan Galleries. It has been an important building on Sauchiehall Street since the mid-1960s. It was one of the first tall buildings built in the city centre after World War II.

The building stands where the Lyric Theatre used to be. That theatre was destroyed by fire in 1953. St Andrew House has a 15-storey tower that used to be offices. Below the tower, there are two floors with shops. Since 2001, a large Cineworld cinema has stood next to it. Don't mix up St Andrew House with St Andrew's House, which is the home of the St. Andrew's Ambulance Association.

History of St Andrew House

For many years, St Andrew House was used as office space. But over time, newer and more modern offices were built in Glasgow. This made it hard for the owners to find companies to rent space in St Andrew House.

Because of this, the building was sold in 2010. The new owners planned to turn it into a hotel. The shops on the ground floor had long leases, which meant the building could not be knocked down.

Becoming a Hotel

In 2010, the hotel company Premier Inn bought the tower. They decided to change it into a hotel with 210 rooms. This was similar to another building, Elmbank Gardens, which was also an old office building turned into a hotel.

St Andrew House is built on a very steep hill in Glasgow. This is why the rooms on the 18th floor are the highest hotel rooms in the city! They are even higher than the fancy rooms on the 20th floor of the Glasgow Hilton hotel.

Modern Makeover

In 2011, St Andrew House got a big makeover. Its old outer walls, made of concrete panels, were removed. They were replaced with a new, modern design. The new hotel officially opened its doors to guests in October 2012.
