The St Barnabas Community Fete, also known as Bowstock, was a fun yearly event. It was a fête (like a big fair) and a music festival. It took place in Bow, London, England, on Wennington Green. This green space is part of Mile End Park. Local volunteers organized the festival every year. They started it in 2003. The idea was to create a free event for everyone. It was for people of all ages and backgrounds. The festival aimed to bring the community together. It also wanted to highlight local issues. Plus, it encouraged people to volunteer and help their community.
A local vicar named Father Brian Ralph helped lead the festival. He was even called the "rock vicar"! The festival ran for many years. Its last event was in 2012.
Music and Community Fun
The festival had a main stage for live music. Many different artists performed there. But it wasn't just professional musicians. Students from local schools also showed off their talents. Community groups performed too. Some of the well-known acts included Babar Luck and The Beat. Other performers were The Blockheads and The Bollywood Brass Band. Even famous artists like Chas'n'Dave and Sham 69 played. Finley Quaye was a surprise guest at the very first fete in 2003.
Around 2,000 people came to the festival each year. It was a popular event for the area.
Activities for Everyone
Besides the music, there were many other things to do. Organizers set up an "information marketplace." This was a place where local community groups could share what they do. People could learn about different ways to get involved.
There were also lots of activities for all ages. You could find a traditional tea dance. This is where people dance to music while enjoying tea. For those who liked more excitement, there were extreme sports activities. The festival made sure there was something fun for everyone to enjoy.
