A Look Back: The Church's Story

St Catherine's Church has a very long history. Its beginnings go all the way back to the Middle Ages. However, most of the church you see today was built much later.

Building the West Tower

The oldest part of the church that stands today is the west tower. This tower was built in 1811. It was constructed by a person named Lord Bulkeley.

New Parts Added in the 1800s

Many other parts of the church were built in 1845. These include the main open area, called the nave. This is where people sit during services. The chancel, which is the area near the altar, was also built then. A porch at the entrance and the tall spire on top of the tower were also added. Architects from Sheffield designed these new sections.

The Organ Chamber

Later, in 1890, another part was added to the church. This was the organ chamber, a special room for the church organ. Henry Kennedy, an architect from Bangor, designed this addition.

Protecting the Church

Because of its history and architecture, St Catherine's Church was given a special status. It became a Grade II site on February 20, 1978. This helps make sure the church is preserved for future generations.
