A Look Back at St Conan's Church
How the Church Was Built
This church was built a long time ago. It cost about £490 to build. That was a lot of money back then! The church was designed by an architect named James Arthur Reeve. He was from Norwich.
The church opened for people to worship on July 23, 1883. Many skilled workers helped build it.
- The stonemasons, who shaped the stones, were Gill and Cleave from Egloshayle.
- Mr. Williams, also from Egloshayle, did all the carpentry work.
- The strong granite parts were made by Mr. Evans. He worked for a company called Doney and Evans.
Special Features Inside the Church
The church has some very old and interesting items.
- There is an ancient font (a basin for baptism) that might be from the Saxon times. This font came from Lanteglos-by-Camelford. It looks a bit like one at Morwenstow. But it has many beautiful Celtic designs. A famous expert, Nikolaus Pevsner, thought it was made around the year 1100 or even earlier.
- You can also see a very nice pulpit. This is where the priest stands to give sermons. Some people think it might have been made in Germany.
Protecting the Church's History
On November 4, 1988, St Conan's Church became a Grade II listed building. This means it's a special building. It is protected because of its history and architecture. This helps make sure it stays safe for many years to come.
Who Was St Conan?
The church is named after a saint called Conan. There are two ideas about who this saint might have been:
- One idea is that he was a friend of another saint, St Petroc.
- Another idea is that he was Conan, who was a bishop in St Germans in the 930s.
St Conan's special day is celebrated every year on July 23.
