St Cyprian's Church is a special church in Nottingham, England. It is part of the Church of England. The church's original name included "Sneinton," but the area it serves has changed. Now, St Cyprian's mostly helps people in the Carlton Hill and Bakersfield areas. Only a very small part of its parish is still in Sneinton.

The church's main service is a Sung Mass. This happens every Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. You can find more information about what the church does on their Facebook page or on the "A Church Near You" website.

History of St Cyprian's Church

The church building was constructed in 1935. The architect, C.E. Howitt, designed it. Building work started in 1934. Bishop Henry Mosley officially opened the church on May 15, 1935. The estimated cost to build it was about £8,500. This money mostly came from the Diocese of Southwell. It came from selling the land where an older church, St. Paul's Church, used to be.

St Cyprian's Church is part of the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. It follows a style of worship called the Traditional Catholic tradition. While it works closely with its local Diocese, it also receives special care from the Bishop of Beverley.

Ancient Font: A Piece of History

The oldest item inside St Cyprian's Church is its font. A font is a basin used for baptisms. Experts believe this font is very old, from the 13th or 14th Century. It was discovered in a field between Gedling and Shelford. When it was found, people were using it as a trough for horses! The damage you can see on the rim of the font likely came from horses' harnesses.

People think the font was originally in a chapel called Saxondale chapel. This chapel was part of Shelford Priory. The chapel was taken down in the 15th Century.

After it was found, the font was first moved to another church, St Michael and All Angels, which is no longer standing. From there, it went to St Cyprian's old church building. Finally, it was moved to the new church building where it is today.

The Church Organ

The organ at St Cyprian's Church was built in 1935. It was made by a company called E. Wragg & Son. This organ is special because it includes some pipes from an older organ. Those pipes came from St. James' Church, Standard Hill. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register website.
