St David's Church was once a Church of England church located in Highgate, Birmingham. It was a special place for many people in the area.

History of St David's Church

Building the Church

Building St David's Church began on July 6, 1864. A special ceremony took place where the Bishop of Worcester, Henry Philpott, laid the first stone. The church was designed by an architect named William Martin. It was finished and officially opened on October 24, 1865, by the same Bishop. In 1866, the area around St David's became its own church district, separate from St Luke's Church, Bristol Street, Birmingham.

A Protest for Women's Rights

In 1914, something very interesting happened at St David's Church. During a visit from the Bishop, a group of women known as suffragettes protested. Suffragettes were women who fought for the right to vote. One woman asked the Bishop to pray for Margaret Haley and other suffragette prisoners. She was asked to leave the church.

Later, just before the Bishop was about to give his sermon, three more suffragettes interrupted him. They asked him to speak out against the unfair treatment of women who were fighting for their rights. As these women left the church, the police had to protect them from an angry crowd. This event showed how important the fight for women's voting rights was at that time.

The Church Closes

St David's Church closed its doors in 1947. After it closed, the building was taken down. The church district that belonged to St David's was then joined back with St Luke's Church, Bristol Street, Birmingham.

The Church Organ

An organ was put into St David's Church by a company called Banfield. This happened shortly after the church was officially opened in 1865.
