A Look Back: The Old Church of Nottage
The village of Nottage is very old. It is even older than nearby Porthcawl and Newton. People think it started with the Saxons. Its first name was Llanddewi. This name means 'the area around St David's Church'.
The first church was near where the Rose and Crown pub is today. Its old graveyard might have been where the village green is now. Human bones have been found there. Around the year 1190, St Johns Church was built. After this, most village life moved to Newton.
The church area of Newton Nottage was set up before 1300. The old church in Nottage was used less and less. It was last mentioned in a record from 1630. It is not clear if it was still working then.
The Modern Church Building
Nottage did not have its own church building for many years. Before World War II, church services were held in a house on Redlands Street.
The First Modern Church (1948)
In 1948, a wooden church was built on land that was given to the community. This building used to be an RAF (Royal Air Force) hut. Two Nissen huts were also bought. These were used as a schoolroom and a waiting room. These huts lasted until 1968. Then, they were taken down. A new timber (wooden) church hall was built in their place.
Part of the land from the 1948 church site was sold in 1970. Parking spaces were added in 1978.
The Current Church (1992)
In the early 1990s, the 1948 wooden church was completely replaced. A new church building was constructed. The old church's bell was saved and moved to the new building. While the new church was being built, services were held in the church hall.
The current church building was officially opened in 1992. Bishop Roy Davies led the special ceremony. The new church hall was finished in 1995.
