St David's Church, located on Bissel Street in Highgate, was a former Church of England parish church. It was found in the city of Birmingham, England. The church was named after St David, the patron saint of Wales.

History of St David's Church

The building of St David's Church began on 6 July 1864. The first stone was laid by the Bishop of Worcester, Henry Philpott. The church was designed by William Martin. He was part of the architecture firm Martin & Chamberlain. J & W Webb, a company from Great King Street, built the church.

The church was officially opened and blessed on 24 October 1865. The same Bishop of Worcester led this special ceremony. In 1866, St David's became its own parish. This means it had its own local area and community to serve. Before this, it was part of St Luke's Church, Bristol Street, Birmingham.

Suffragette Protest in 1914

In 1914, St David's Church was the site of a protest by suffragettes. These were women who fought for the right to vote. During a visit by the Bishop, a woman asked him to pray for Margaret Haley and other suffragette prisoners. She was then asked to leave the church.

Later, three more suffragettes interrupted the Bishop's sermon. They asked him to speak out against the harsh treatment of women fighting for their rights. As these women left, the police had to protect them from an angry crowd.

Church Closure and Demolition

St David's Church closed its doors in 1947. After its closure, the building was taken down. The area that was once St David's parish became part of St Luke's Church, Bristol Street, Birmingham again.

Church Organ

An organ was put into St David's Church by a company called Banfield. This happened soon after the church was officially opened in 1865.
