St David's Church, Nottage is a church in Nottage, South Wales. It belongs to the Church in Wales, which is part of the worldwide Anglican Christian family.
A Look Back: The Old Church
The village of Nottage is very old, even older than nearby Porthcawl and Newton. People think it started in Saxon times, which was over a thousand years ago! Its first name was Llanddewi. This name means 'the area around the Church of St David'.
The very first church in Nottage was located next to where the Rose and Crown pub is today. Its graveyard might have been where the village green is now, because old human remains have been found there.
After a new church called St Johns was built in Newton around 1190, people started to gather more in Newton. The old church in Nottage was used less and less. It was last mentioned in a record from 1630.
Building the Modern Church
For many years, Nottage did not have its own church building. Church services were held in a house on Redlands Street. After World War II, in 1948, a wooden church was set up. This building used to be a church for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It was placed on land that was kindly given to the church.
Two Nissen huts were also bought. These were special curved metal buildings. They were used as a schoolroom and a waiting area. These huts were used until 1968. Then, they were taken down and replaced with a new church hall made of timber.
In 1970, a part of the original church land from 1948 was sold. Later, in 1978, parking spaces were added for people visiting the church.
A New Building for Worship
In the early 1990s, the old wooden church from 1948 was completely replaced. A brand new church building was constructed. The old church's bell was saved and moved to the new building.
While the new church was being built, services were held in the church hall. The current church building was officially opened and blessed by Bishop Roy Davies in 1992. A new church hall was also finished in 1995.
