How St Edeyrn's Church Began
St Edeyrn's is one of many old Christian places that were started a long time ago. This happened soon after Llandaff Cathedral was founded. The early Christian church wanted to spread its message quickly across the region.
Missionaries and Their Work
Saint Edeyrn and his friend Saint Isan were missionaries. They were sent by Saint Teilo to help spread Christianity. Isan helped to start a church in what is now Llanishen. Later, Edeyrn started his own religious community. This community was built near the Rhymney River. People believe that Saint Edeyrn is buried in the churchyard.
Changes Through the Years
After the Norman Conquest, the church was rebuilt. It became a "chapel of ease." This meant it was a smaller church that helped people who lived far from the main parish church.
Ownership and Design Changes
In the 12th century, the church belonged to Tewkesbury Abbey. However, in 1236, it was given back to the Bishop of Llandaff. At this time, it became its own separate parish. Around the year 1500, large "Perpendicular windows" were added. These are a type of window design popular in that period. The church tower was built soon after.
Church Bells and Restoration
The tower has six bells. Five of these bells are very old, dating back to 1766. The church had a big restoration project in 1888. During this work, the east wall of the chancel (the part of the church near the altar) was completely rebuilt.
The Church in Recent Times
In the 20th century, St Edeyrn's Church became part of the new Diocese of Monmouth. This happened after the Church in Wales was created.
Modern Status and Updates
Today, the church is part of the Cyncoed Ministry Area. It shares this area with other churches like All Saints (Cyncoed), All Saints (Llanedeyrn), and St David's (Pentwyn). In 1963, the church received its "listed status." This means it is recognized as an important historical building. After this, the roof's machine-made tiles were replaced with traditional Welsh slate. An extra bell was added to the tower in 1994.
