Who Was Saint Isan?
Saint Isan lived a long time ago, in the 500s. He was a saint, which means he was a very holy person who dedicated his life to helping others and spreading Christian teachings. He is remembered for his work in establishing churches in Wales.
His Teacher and Friends
Isan was a student of another famous Celtic teacher named Saint Illtyd. Illtyd taught many people who became important saints themselves.
Around the year 535 AD, Saint Isan worked closely with another saint, Saint Edeyrn. They traveled together from a small religious community in Llandaff. Their goal was to build new churches in the area around Caerphilly mountain. They carefully chose locations for their churches that had fresh water, often near streams like the Nant Fawr.
Building Churches in Wales
Saint Isan founded his own church in Llanishen, Cardiff. This church was built on the spot where the modern-day Oval is located.
His friend, Saint Edeyrn, traveled even more widely. Because of his journeys, there are churches dedicated to him in both North Wales and South Wales. Edeyrn also brought together a large group of about 300 people. This community lived and worshipped together in the Llanedeyrn area.
Where Is He Remembered Today?
Saint Isan's legacy lives on in the names of churches. You can find churches dedicated to him in two different places called Llanishen. One is in Llanishen, Monmouthshire, and the other is in Llanishen, Cardiff. These churches help people remember his important work from centuries ago.
