The Church's Story
Early Beginnings
Before the current church was built, there was a smaller place of worship in the area. In 1857, a barn was turned into a church, and people called it Splott Chapel or Christ Church. As more and more people moved to the area, this small church became too crowded.
In 1874, a new, bigger church made of iron was put up. But even this building quickly became too small for the fast-growing community.
Building the New Church
By 1881, the people of the parish had saved £5000 to build a much larger and more permanent church. A kind person named Lord Tredegar generously gave the land for the new building. He even helped lay the first stone in April 1882.
The famous architect George Frederick Bodley designed the new church. He worked with his partner, Thomas Garner. The church was built between 1881 and 1884.
What Makes It Special?
Experts describe St German's Church as "tall, spacious, and elegant." It became a very important building in the local area. One special feature inside the church is a beautifully carved and painted organ case. It's high up on the south wall of the chancel. This organ case was a gift to the church.
Right next to the church, there is also a school and a house for the clergy (church leaders). These buildings were designed by the same architects and built at the same time as the church.
A New Parish and Vicar
St German's Church was officially opened and blessed in March 1886. At the same time, the new parish of St German was created. More recently, on March 23, 2024, the Reverend Canon Jarel Robinson-Brown became the new vicar of St Germans.
St German's in the Media
St German's Church has even been featured on the radio! The BBC Radio 4 programme The Daily Service has broadcast its services from St German's on several occasions.
