History of St James Church
The very first church building was opened in 1842. It was designed by an architect named Samuel Angell. Later, in 1874, the church was made bigger to fit more people.
Building the Current Church
A new and much larger church was designed in 1898 by J. S. Alder. The first stone for this new building was put in place in the year 1900. The completed church was officially opened by the Bishop of London, Rev. Arthur Winnington-Ingram, on June 30, 1902.
World War II and Restoration
During World War II, the church building was badly damaged by bombs. After the war, it was carefully repaired and reopened in 1952. Years later, a new church centre was built. Its first stone was laid on May 20, 1994, and you can still see it in the church's bookshop today.
Church Height and Location
The church's tall spire was finished in 1910. The church itself stands on a hill that is over 300 feet (about 91 meters) above sea level. With its impressive tower and spire, the church reaches a height of 179 feet (about 54 meters).
St James School
A primary school connected to the church was built nearby in 1850. The school later moved to a new building on Woodside Avenue.
Vicars of St James
The vicar is the main priest in charge of the church. Many vicars have led St James Church over the years.
- The first vicar was John Jackson, who served from 1842 to 1846. He later became a bishop in London.
- Today, the vicar of St James Church is Reverend Christopher Green. He has been serving the church since 2014.
