A Look Back: Church History

How the Church Began

The church community in Peasedown St John was officially started in 1874. The current church building was completed in 1893. It was designed by famous architects named Bodley and Garner.

Changes Over Time

In 1959, the responsibility for choosing the church's vicar was passed to the Bishop of Bath and Wells. This means the Bishop now helps decide who leads the church.

The church building was updated and made new again in 1989 and 1990. During this time, services were held in the church hall next door.

Celebrating 100 Years

In 1993, the church celebrated its 100th birthday! Important church leaders, like the Bishop of Bath and Wells (who was the Rt Revd Jim Thompson at the time), visited for the celebration. There was also a special evening service where the Archdeacon of Bath gave a sermon.
