History of the Church Building

Changes Over the Years

Knights Hospitaller Connection
For many centuries, this church was linked to a famous group called the Knights Hospitaller. They were a Christian military order that started in the 11th century. They were known for helping pilgrims and caring for the sick.
From around 1199, a small community or "cell" of the Knights Hospitaller was based right here at Winkburn. They stayed here for a very long time, possibly until 1832.
