St John the Baptist's Church, located in Norwich, is a very old and important building. It is a parish church for the local community. This church is part of the Church of England. It is also a Grade I listed building. This means it is considered one of the most important historic buildings in England.

A Look at the Church's History

This church has been around for a very long time. People used to call it by different names. Some called it 'St. John ad Montem', which means 'St. John at the Hill'. Others knew it as 'St. John at the Castle-gate' or 'St. John by the Swine-market'. These names tell us about its location in the past.

What the Church Looked Like Long Ago

In 1783, someone wrote down what the church was like. It had a main area called a nave, which was covered with a thatched roof. The chancel, a part near the altar, had a tiled roof. There was also a porch on the south side. The church had two aisles and small chapels. These parts had lead roofs. The church also had a square tower with five bells.

How the Church Changed Over Time

Some parts of the church are incredibly old, dating back to the 11th century. But most of the building you see today was built in the 15th century. That's over 500 years ago! The church is made from flint and brick. It also has special stone decorations.

Over the years, the church's windows were updated. This happened during the Victorian period. The old thatched roof on the nave was replaced with tiles. A big change happened in 1784. The church's tower fell down! A new stone bellcote was built in 1877 to replace it.

The Church Organ

Inside the church, there is an organ. This musical instrument has been changed many times. These updates happened throughout the 20th century. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
