St John the Baptist's Church, Timberhill, Norwich is a historic church in England. It is located in the city of Norwich, in Norfolk. This church is a Grade I listed building. This means it is very important and protected because of its history and special architecture. It belongs to the Church of England.
History of the Church Building
This church has been known by different names over time. Some early writers called it 'St. John ad Montem', which means 'at the Hill'. Others referred to it as 'St. John at the Castle-gate' or 'St. John by the Swine-market'.
In 1783, people described the church. It had a main area called a nave with a thatched roof. The chancel, which is the area near the altar, had a tiled roof. There was also a south porch and two aisles, which are side sections. These aisles had chapels at their east ends and were covered with lead. The church also had a square tower with five bells.
Some parts of the church, especially at the east end, are from the 11th century. However, most of the building you see today was built in the 15th century. It is made from flint and brick, with stone details.
During the Victorian period, all the windows were either repaired or replaced. The roof over the nave is now tiled. The original tower fell down in 1784. A new stone bellcote was built in 1877 to hold the bells. A bellcote is a small structure on a roof that holds bells.
