St John the Baptist Church is a historic building in Corney, Cumbria, England. It is a local church for the area. This church belongs to the Anglican faith. It is part of the diocese of Carlisle.

What is the History of St John the Baptist Church?

The church of St John the Baptist is very old. It is believed to have been built in the 1100s. Over time, buildings need repairs. This church was fixed up in 1882.

Long ago, this church was connected to a big abbey in York. That abbey was called St Mary's Abbey, York. In 1536, the abbey was involved with the church. Later, in 1803, a rich family bought the right to choose the church's priest. This family was led by the Earl of Lonsdale.

In 1847, a report described the church. It said the church was a simple building. It had a small tower for bells. A new room for the church leaders was added that same year.

What Does the Church Look Like?

The church is built from local stones. These stones are red and grey. The roof is made of slate. There is a small bell tower. This tower holds two bells.

Inside, the church has one main room. This room is called the Nave. The windows are not clear. They let in light but you cannot see through them. The seats, called pews, are fixed in place.

There is a special stone basin inside. It is called a font. This font is round and grey. It has words carved into it. These words are "of the farther and of the son and of the holy spirit".

What Can You Find in the Churchyard?

Around the church is a churchyard. This is where people are buried. There are about 100 gravestones here. One of these gravestones marks the grave of a soldier. This soldier died in a war.

The churchyard also has a sundial. A sundial tells the time using the sun's shadow. This sundial is from 1822. It was a gift from a person named Edward Troughton.
