History of the Church
Building the Church
The plans for St John the Evangelist's Church were drawn up in 1844. The architect who designed it was Henry Isaac Stevens. A local person named Colonel Colville, from Duffield Hall, helped raise money to build the church. The church was officially opened and blessed on May 19, 1846, by the Bishop of Lichfield.
Fire and Restoration
Sadly, the church was badly damaged by a fire on February 1, 1902. It took a lot of work to fix it. The church was repaired and reopened on December 2, 1902. The repairs cost about £2,000, which was a lot of money back then! A company from Derby called Naylor and Sale did the restoration work.
