History of St John the Evangelist's Church

This church has a fascinating past, including its construction and a big fire!

Building the Church

The plans for St John the Evangelist's Church were drawn up in 1844 by an architect named Henry Isaac Stevens. The church was built thanks to money raised by Colonel Colville, who lived at Duffield Hall. It was officially opened and blessed on May 19, 1846, by the Bishop of Lichfield. This special ceremony is called a "consecration."

Fire and Restoration

On February 1, 1902, the church was badly damaged by a fire. It was a big challenge for the community. Luckily, the church was restored and reopened just a few months later, on December 2, 1902. The repairs cost about £2,000, which was a lot of money back then! The restoration work was done by a company from Derby called Naylor and Sale.

Parish Status and Community

A "parish" is like a local area that a church serves. St John the Evangelist's Church is part of a larger group of churches.

Working Together

This church shares its parish duties with three other churches. They work together to serve their local communities. These churches are:

The Church Organ

After the big fire in 1902, the church needed a new organ.

A New Sound for the Church

A new organ was installed in 1902. It was built by Charles Lloyd from Nottingham. Organs are large musical instruments that make beautiful sounds, often used during church services.
