St John the Evangelist, Taunton facts for kids
The Church of St John the Evangelist in Taunton, Somerset, is a special old church in England. It's part of the Church of England and is considered a very important historical building. This means it's protected because of its unique history and design.
Building a Church for Everyone
Back in the 1850s, a kind person named Reverend Frederick Jeremiah Smith had an idea. He wanted to build a new church in Taunton especially for people who didn't have much money. He wanted everyone to feel welcome.
So, from 1858 to 1863, the church was built. A very famous architect from that time, George Gilbert Scott, helped design it. He used different types of stone from Somerset, like Hamstone and Bath stone.
What made this church extra special was that it didn't charge "pew rents." In many churches back then, people had to pay to sit in certain seats. But St John's was the first Anglican church in Taunton where everyone could come and worship for free. It was officially opened and blessed on April 13, 1863. A year later, in 1864, a large organ made by a famous builder named "Father" Henry Willis was installed.
St John's Church Today
Today, the Church of St John the Evangelist works closely with another church in Taunton, St Mary Magdalene, Taunton. They are part of a group called a "benefice." This means they share resources and work together.
The church is also part of a larger church area called the Archdeaconry of Taunton. This is within the Diocese of Bath and Wells, which is how the Church of England organizes its churches.
When St John's was first built, it followed a style of worship called "Anglo-Catholic." This is a specific tradition within the Church of England. Now, in the 21st century, it is known as an "Inclusive Catholic" church. This means it welcomes everyone, no matter who they are.
