History of St Margaret's Church

Building the Church

The first step in building St Margaret's Church happened on May 9, 1874. On that day, the Bishop of Worcester laid the foundation stone. This is a special ceremony that marks the start of construction. The church was designed by an architect named Frank Barlow Osborn. A company called Wilson and Sons built the church.

Opening the Church

The church was finished and ready for use in 1875. It was officially opened on October 2, 1875. This special event is called a "consecration." The Bishop of Worcester, Henry Philpott, led the ceremony.

A New Parish

In 1876, St Margaret's Church became the center of its own "parish." A parish is like a local area that a church serves. Before this, the area was part of the St John's Church, Ladywood parish.

The Church Closes

St Margaret's Church closed its doors in 1957. It was taken down, or "demolished," soon after. When the church was demolished, its high altar was moved. It found a new home at St Paul's Church in Grove Park, Chiswick.

The Church Organ

What is a Church Organ?

A church organ is a large musical instrument. It uses pipes to make sounds. Organs are often played during church services. They can make very powerful and beautiful music.

St Margaret's Organ

St Margaret's Church had an organ made by a company called Noble. When the church closed in 1957, the organ was moved. It was given to St Chad's Church, Rubery, which is in Worcestershire. This means the music from St Margaret's organ continued to be heard in another church.
