History of St Margaret's Church
Early Years and Restoration
St Margaret's Church is very old. It was built a long time ago, during the Middle Ages. For about five or six years, the church was closed. Then, in 1868, it was fixed up and made new again. This process is called a restoration.
World War II Damage
During World War II, many parts of the church were damaged. Bombs destroyed a lot of its beautiful stained glass windows. These windows were made in the Victorian era. In the 1960s, a new window was put in the east side of the church. It shows a scene called the Ascension. This new window was created by an artist named David King.
New Uses for the Church
After a while, St Margaret's Church was no longer used for regular church services. It became a "redundant" church. For some time, it was used as a gymnasium. More recently, it has been a place for art shows and markets where people sell old items like antiques.
