History and Features of the Church
Some parts of St Margaret's Church are very old, dating back to the 12th century. This means they are over 800 years old! The church has been changed and rebuilt many times over the centuries. Around 1650, a big part of it was rebuilt. The north wall of the church is still part of the original, larger building.
Inside, the church has a special pulpit. A pulpit is where the priest stands to give sermons. This one is made of oak wood and has three levels. It also has a fancy canopy from the Jacobean period (around the 1600s). This pulpit is still used today.
Church Clock and Font
In 1680, the church got a new clock. It was built by a famous clockmaker named Richard Roe from Epperstone.
The church also has a font, which is a basin used for baptisms. This font is shaped like an octagon (an eight-sided shape) and has a castellated top, like the walls of a castle. Experts believe it was made in the 15th century, making it over 500 years old! There is also a wooden screen inside the church that separates the main seating area (the nave) from the altar area (the chancel). People say this screen came from Owthorpe Hall, a nearby historic house.
Restorations of the Church
The church has been carefully repaired and updated several times.
- In 1888, it had its first restoration.
- In 1905, it was restored again by architects Arthur Brewill and Basil Baily. During this work, a plaster ceiling was removed. This showed the wooden beams of the roof, which had been hidden. The stone frames around the windows were also fixed, and new glass was put in.
Important Memorials
Inside St Margaret's Church, you can find memorials to important people.
- One memorial is for Colonel John Hutchinson. He was a famous figure from the 1600s. He passed away on September 11, 1664.
