Discovering St. Mark's Church

St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church is a special place for many people in Ipswich. It serves the local community and is a key part of the Catholic faith in the area. The church is dedicated to Saint Mark.

How St. Mark's Church Started

Before St. Mark's Church was built, the people in this area went to St Pancras Church, Ipswich. The church was first looked after by a group of friars called the Franciscans. These friars came from East Bergholt Abbey and also helped people in a nearby village called Brantham.

Around 1973, many Franciscans moved away. However, a few stayed in Ipswich to continue their work. The Franciscans eventually left the area completely in 1994.

St. Mark's School: Learning and Growing

Right next to the church, there is a Roman Catholic primary school also named St. Mark's. This school opened in 1967. It helps children learn and grow in a faith-based environment. In 2018, the students at St. Mark's School did very well. They won the Suffolk Junior Schools Mock Trial Competition, showing off their amazing legal skills!

Connecting with Other Communities

St. Mark's Church also helps other Catholic communities nearby. For example, the Catholic Church of the Holy Family in the village of Brantham is served by the priests from St. Mark's. This shows how churches often work together to support different areas.
