History of St Martin's Church
This church was first built a very long time ago, in the 12th century. That means it was built around the 1100s! The oldest part you can still see today is the south doorway, which dates back to around the year 1200.
Key Features and Styles
One of the most interesting parts of the church is the fancy window tracery. Tracery refers to the stone patterns that hold the glass in place in the windows. You can see these detailed patterns in the south aisle and the chancel. The south aisle is a side part of the church, and the chancel is the area near the altar where the clergy sit. These parts were built between about 1300 and 1340.
The tall tower on the west side of the church was built in a style called Perpendicular. This was a popular style of English Gothic architecture from the late 14th to the mid-16th centuries. It's known for its strong vertical lines and large windows.
Restoration Work
Over the centuries, buildings like St Martin's Church need care to stay in good condition. This church was restored in the 19th century. Restoration means repairing and bringing something back to its original or best possible state, often fixing damage or wear and tear.
