St Mary's Church in North Huish, Devon, England, is a very old and special building. It was built a long time ago in the 14th century. Today, it is looked after by a group called the Churches Conservation Trust. This church is so important that it is officially recognized as a Grade I listed building. This means it is a historic place that needs to be protected.

The church was declared a "redundant church" on March 1, 1993. This means it was no longer used for regular church services. It was then given to the Churches Conservation Trust on August 10, 1998, so they could take care of it.

A Look at St Mary's Church

Some parts of St Mary's Church are from the 14th century, which means they are over 600 years old! The south aisle, which is a walkway in the church, was added later in the 15th century.

The Church's History

We know that a church leader, called a rector, was recorded here in 1308. The church building was rebuilt and officially opened in 1336. This special event was led by a bishop named John Grandisson. The church also had a big renovation in the 19th century, which means it was updated and repaired.

The Tower and Its Features

The church has a west tower with two main sections. It has strong supports called buttresses on each corner. You can reach the ringing stage, where the church bells are, by a spiral staircase. This staircase is inside a round tower on the north side. The top of the tower has an eight-sided, pointed roof called an octagonal recessed spire.

Inside the Church

When you go inside St Mary's Church, you can see some very old screens. There is also a special stone basin called a font, which is used for baptisms. This font is made of granite, has eight sides, and is dated 1662. Most of the other things inside, like the wooden pulpit and the wall tablets, are from the Victorian period (the 1800s).

What is a Listed Building?

A listed building is a building that has been officially recognized as being historically or architecturally important. In England, these buildings are recorded in the National Heritage List for England. Being a Grade I listed building means St Mary's Church is considered to be of exceptional interest. This helps to protect it for future generations.
