The Church of St Mary is a special old church in Rogiet, a small village in Monmouthshire, Wales. Rogiet is located on the Caldicot Levels, about 8 miles west of Chepstow. This church is very important because it is a Grade II* listed building, which means it's a historic place protected for its special architecture and history.

A Look at St Mary's History
The Church of St Mary is very old. It was first built in the 1200s, or even earlier! Over time, new parts were added. For example, the tower was built in the 1300s. Later, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the church was repaired and rebuilt.
Who Was St Hilary?
The church was originally named after "St Hilary." This name might refer to two different saints. One could be St Eleri, a Welsh saint. The other could be St Hilary of Arles, a bishop from France.
Unique Church Design
St Mary's Church has a very interesting shape. It has a tall tower, a shorter main hall (called the nave), and a lower area for the altar (called the chancel). These different heights make the church look unique and easy to remember.
Building Style and Materials
The church was built in a style called "Gothic Decorated." This style was popular in the 13th and 14th centuries. It often features detailed carvings and large windows. The stone used for the windows and tower is called Triassic stone. This type of stone formed millions of years ago.

St Mary's Church Today
In 2001, St Mary's Church joined with two other churches. These were St Mary's Church Caldicot and St Mary's Church Portskewett. Together, they formed a new group called the Rectorial Benefice of Caldicot.
Challenges Faced by the Church
Around 2011, the church faced a challenge. It had less money than needed to keep going. This meant there was a possibility it might have to close. However, the community worked to support the church.
