History of St Mary's Church
Building the Church
Work on St Mary's Church began in 1850. It was finished and opened in 1851. The person who designed the church was an architect named George Mathewson. He created it in a style known as Byzantine-Romanesque architecture. This style often uses round arches and strong, simple shapes.
Changes and Additions
Between 1900 and 1901, some new parts were added to the front of the church. These included two tall towers and a narthex. A narthex is an entrance hall or porch at the front of a church. These new parts were designed by Thomas Martin Cappon. They were built by William G. Lamond in the Art Nouveau style, which is known for its flowing lines and natural shapes. Later, in 1926, more additions were made to the church. These were designed by Reginald Fairlie and included several side chapels.
The Parish Community
St Mary's Church is part of a "parish," which is a local area served by a church. This church also helps serve St Patrick's Church, which is another church in Dundee. St Patrick's Church is located on Arthurstone Terrace in the Stobswell area. It was built between 1897 and 1899. Thomas Martin Cappon, who worked on St Mary's, also designed St Patrick's. St Patrick's Church is also a Category B listed building, just like St Mary's.
St Mary's Church has one Sunday Mass at 11:15 AM. St Patrick's Church has one Sunday Mass at 9:30 AM.
