Stobswell's Past: A Look at History

Stobswell grew up around a special well. This well provided water to nearby farms like Janefield and Maryfield. The name Stob comes from a Scots word. It means a "post" or "marker." This marker told travelers they were one mile (about 1.6 km) from Dundee.

In the 1800s, rich factory owners, sometimes called "jute barons," built homes here. These homes were for the many workers in the city's textile mills. In 1856, a large building called the East Dundee Poorhouse was built. It helped people who needed support. Later, it became a hospital and care home for older people. It is now known as The Rowans.

Morgan Academy opened in 1868. It was first called Morgan Hospital. It helped provide a home and education for children whose families needed support. The current Stobswell Church was built in 1874. It is a local Church of Scotland parish church.
