History of St Matthew's Church
The First Church Building
The first St Matthew's Church was built in 1849. It was located in an area of Wolverhampton called Lower Horseley Fields. The church was designed by an architect named Edward Banks.
The building work was done by John Cockerill, a local builder from Wolverhampton. The church had a main hall (called a nave), side sections (aisles), and a special area near the altar (a chancel). It also had a small tower for bells on the roof.
Building the church cost about £3,300, which was a lot of money back then! An extra £1,200 was spent to buy the land. The church was officially opened and blessed on November 20, 1849.
A New Beginning: The Current Church
The first church building was taken down in 1964. A new church was then designed by Peter Brownhill. This new building, which is the one you see today, opened its doors in 1969. It is located on East Park Way.
Notable People at St Matthew's
Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkin worked at St Matthew's Church in the early to mid-1990s. She was a Curate, which is a priest who is still training. Later, she became the Bishop of Dover, a very important role in the Church of England.
Church Organ
The first St Matthew's Church had a special musical instrument called a pipe organ. It was made by a company called Nicholson and Lord. You can find more details about this organ in a special record called the National Pipe Organ Register.
