St Michael's Church is a special old church in the village of Myddfai, in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It's a place of worship for the Church in Wales. The church is located south of Llandovery.

The main parts of the building you see today were built a very long time ago. They date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Over the years, some parts of the church have been repaired and updated. This happened in 1874, when a small tower for bells, called a bellcote, was added. More work was done in 1926 to keep the church in good condition.

What Makes the Church Special?

Unique Design

This church has a very interesting design. It has two main sections side-by-side, called a "double nave." Each section has its own roof, running parallel to the other. The southern part of the church might be the oldest. Experts believe it was built in the 15th century.

Inside, the church has beautiful original ceilings. These ceilings are made of plaster panels. They also have decorative wooden ribs. These wooden parts run all through the building. They show how skilled the builders were long ago.

A Protected Building

St Michael's Church is very important. On August 7, 1966, it was given a special status. It became a Grade I-listed building. This means it's considered one of the most important historic buildings in the country.

It's special because it's a "medieval church." This means it was built during the Middle Ages. It's also quite large and detailed for a church in a quiet, rural area. Many parts of its inside are still original. This includes the arches, called arcades. The old roofs from the late Middle Ages are also still there. Even the patterns in the windows, known as window tracery, are mostly original. Having a double nave is also quite rare in this area of Wales. It's more common in a different county called Powys.
