St Michael's Church is an old and important church in the village of Myddfai, which is in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It serves as the main church for the local Anglican community. The church building we see today was mostly built during the 14th and 15th centuries. It has been carefully repaired and updated several times, including in 1874 and 1926. During the 1874 work, a small tower for bells, called a bellcote, was added.

What Makes St Michael's Church Special?

The church has a very interesting design. It features a double nave, which means it has two main parts running side-by-side. Each of these parts has its own roof, so you see twin parallel roofs. The southern part of the church might be the oldest section, possibly dating back to the 1400s.

Inside the Church

When you step inside St Michael's Church, you can see its original beauty. The ceilings are covered with plaster-panelled roofs. These panels have decorative moulded timber ribs that run across the entire building. This design shows how skilled the builders were long ago.

A Protected Historic Building

St Michael's Church is considered a very important historical site. On August 7, 1966, it was given a special status as a Grade I-listed building. This means it's one of the most important historic buildings in the United Kingdom.

It received this high rating because it's a great example of a medieval church that is still mostly complete. Its size and detailed work are quite surprising for a church in such a quiet, rural area. The inside of the church is also very well-preserved. This includes its archways (called arcades), its complete late medieval roofs, and many of its old window designs (called tracery). Having a double nave is also quite rare in this part of Wales, making the church even more unique.
