How Old is the Church?

St Oswald's Church was first built a very long time ago, in the 1400s. That's over 600 years ago! The main parts of the church, like the nave and chancel, were rebuilt in 1862. This work was done by an architect named Thomas Chambers Hine.

Important Old Headstones

In the churchyard, there are three old headstones that are also protected. They are called Grade II listed items. This means they are important because of their age and design. These headstones are made from a type of stone called ashlar. They have special carvings and messages on them.

  • One headstone from 1729 remembers Mary B....oll.
  • Another from 1738 is for Robert, the son of John and Mary Wills.
  • The third, from 1731, marks the grave of Mary, the wife of John Bacon.

Historic Gateways

Even the two gateways that lead into the churchyard are very old and special. They are also Grade II listed, just like the headstones. This shows how much history is packed into this church and its surroundings.
